What is Firmware?

Firmware is a name given to any software that is embedded in a piece of hardware. It can be run without extra instructions from the operating system. The most common example of firmware is a computers BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) which is burned into a ROM (Read-Only Memory) chip. Firmware is designed and installed by the manufacturer before you purchase the device. When a device is powered on, firmware is the first part to run and starts sending instructions to the device's processor to execute.

Firmware Updates

A firmware update is as necessary as a software update. Manufacturers of devices create updated and better firmware which can help support maximum efficiency of the product.

Devices that need firmware updates frequently include computers, printers, routers, modems, & cameras. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions when installing any firmware, as it helps to avoid applying the wrong update to your device.

Benefits of doing a firmware update:

  1. A firmware update will upgrade your device with advanced operational instructions without needing to upgrade the hardware.

  2. New features may become available and enhance user experience.

  3. Performance of device will be optimized.

  4. Past issues can be resolved.

  5. Regular firmware updates will reduce the need for expensive repairs or bug fixes.
