How to Export and Import Bookmarks in Google Chrome

Exporting bookmarks come in handy when you want to import saved bookmarks to another browser or Chrome profile for yourself or others. 

Export:

The first step is to open up google chrome and then navigate to the Bookmarks manager and there are a couple ways to get to there:

  1. Right click on the bookmarks bar and click on Bookmark manager

  2. Click the 3 vertical dots in the upper right corner to open the Chrome menu, Click on Bookmarks, and then go to Bookmarks manager

3. Keyboard Shortcuts:

Mac: Command + Option + B

Windows: Ctrl + B

4. Type in chrome://bookmarks in the address bar.

Once you are in the Bookmark Manager, you will see all of your saved bookmarks and bookmark folders. To export these,

  1. Click the three vertical dots in the upper right corner to the right of the ‘Search Bookmarks Bar’

  2. Click Export bookmarks.

  3. This will open up Finder if you are on a Mac or File Explorer if you are on Windows. Save the file to any destination you like and it will save it as a HTML file.

Import:

Now that you have this HTML file that contains all exported bookmarks, you can import your bookmarks to any browser or another Chrome profile on your computer or someone else’s.

You can also open up that html file on its own to see all of your bookmarks on one page and click on the hyperlinks.


To import bookmarks to Chrome:

  1. Go to the bookmarks manager again using any of the 4 methods I mentioned before.

  2. Click the three vertical dots in the upper right corner to the right of the ‘Search Bookmarks’ bar and click Import bookmarks.

  3. This will launch your files so that you can search for the html file that was saved after exporting the bookmarks. Once you have the file selected, click Open.

  4. Once imported, you will instantly see an Imported bookmarks folder that contains all of the bookmarks or all of the bookmarks will show in the bookmarks bar.
